Does Hypnosis Work?
The many Hollywood scripts and movies of the world have perpetuated a wrong picture of hypnosis. Many think that when one goes in the hypnotic stage, one loses his will, mind, and does things that the hypnotizers wants them to do. Unscrupulous individuals who know hypnotization have used the technique to gain their evil ends, however scientific study suggests otherwise. Only those can be hypnotized who willing to give in to the suggestions of the hypnotizer and hence one cannot be hypnotized against one’s will. The subconscious mind of humans is of exceptional potential, one cannot explore it in a normal way, and hypnosis opens up the subconscious mind. The controversy regarding the credibility of hypnosis has reigned for long and the popular culture has perpetuated many misconceptions about the technique. However, nations of the world now have allowed trained hypnosis practitioners to use the therapy in treating mental and physical problems.
The first attempt towards the scientific research of hypnosis is credited to James Braid who is known as the father of hypnosis. Despite the pioneering work of scientists, mystery still shrouds the phenomenon but testimonials by patients amply describe the benefits of hypnosis. Psychology professor, William Ray of the Pennsylvania State University conducted research in this regard, which revealed that hypnosis takes away the emotional experience of pain but the sensory experience stays there. The Stanford University in 1950 studied the susceptibility aspect in hypnosis and came up with the result that as much as 98% individuals can be hypnotized. The susceptibility yardstick proposed by the research of the University pointed to the credibility of the discipline. Today, the use of hypnosis therapy is considered a significant alternative treatment along with therapies like acupressure, naturotherapy, and other such alternative treatments. Hypnosis does help in bringing positive and effective changes in one’s habits and it has the potential to completely alter the current unwanted behavioral patterns of the individuals.
